Updated: Body found inside charred rubble

Update: Authorities issued a news release Monday confirming a dead body was found inside the charred rubble Sunday night. Investigators said they found evidence suggesting the male subject died from an apparent suicide but did not provide any details as to what led them to that conclusion. Official sources also confirmed there was some type of an explosion inside the home but would not elaborate on what caused it.

The home located near Nichols Canyon Road in the Fiddlers Canyon Area caught fire around 4:45 p.m. Firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes. By then, the house was completely engulfed in flames. Cedar City Police Sgt. Clint Pollock said.

Five homes to the north and south were threatened and evacuated.

“The neighbors surrounding the home were told to leave until firefighters could get the fire under control,” Pollock said.

Due to the size of the fire, firefighters decided to take a defensive approach and protect the adjacent homes while continuing to fight to suppress the house fire.

The surrounding homes are no longer in danger, but firefighters are still working on hot spots inside the original house.

“We have equipment on scene that is working to help the firefighters,” Pollock said. “They are pushing down one of the walls of the home as part of those suppression efforts but contrary to some rumors they are not leveling the house. It’s all just part of trying to get the fire completely out.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown, and authorities are not sure whether anyone was inside. At this time, no injuries are being reported. The scene is still under investigation.
