CEDAR CITY – Authorities responded to a fire Wednesday afternoon they are now investigating for possible arson.
Iron County Sheriff deputies along with fire fighters from the Bureau of Land Management and the Cedar City Fire Department responded to the scene at around 3 p.m. The fire, located in the area of 2500 W. 5500 North, had spread to about three-quarters of an acre.
The fire may have been a rekindling of one that had started around some wooden pallets the night before, Iron County Sheriff’s Lt. Del Schlosser said. Investigators however, were unable to pinpoint a fire source, leading them to believe it may have been arson.
“There was no real reason for the fire to start,” Schlosser said. “There were no electrical cords – no grinding – no smoking. There are none of the typical indications as to why it would have started two hours after dark when the temperatures are cooler. So, for now, we are approaching this as though it was human caused.”
The state fire marshal is investigating the fire to determine its origin while Schlosser said. he has “persons of interest” he will be interviewing over the next few days.
The fire destroyed approximately $5,000 in personal property including a camp trailer, fishing boat and building supplies.
